Iodine Supplements for Women
There is increasing evidence that New Zealanders are not ingesting enough iodine. This is necessary for growth and fetal brain development.
Women attempting to conceive as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women should consider taking an iodine supplement called NeuroKare which is available from chemists, your GP and fully funded through Pharmac.
New Zealand has low iodine levels in the soil and previously iodine has been obtained through iodised salt and from dairy products because the dairy industry used iodophors for sanitation.
As we move to using rock salt and the dairy industry changes its sanitising processes, our iodine levels have fallen.
